In the face of the emergency, Telefónica Movistar has made the commitment to UNICEF Ecuador to hold a fund-raising campaign through text messages (SMS). This initiative is to assist the victims of the 7.8 intensity earthquake last April 116th, which affected the Ecuadorian Coast.
The campaign will request Ecuadorians to donate $ 1.00, by sending an SMS with the word AYUDO (I will help) to 9494. 50% of the funds raised will be delivered to UNICEF Ecuador, and the other 50% to the Red Cross. What UNICEF receives will be spent on education, health and nutrition, protection, and water and sanitation programs.
As part of the emergency response, UNICEF has set up chemical latrines in the shelters in the zones most seriously affected, distributed 20,000 water sterilizing pills, and is implementing the “Back to Happiness” project, a psycho-social recovery strategy targeting boys and girls affected by the earthquake.
Additionally, UNICEF is helping the Ministry of Education set up temporary schools and providing “School in a Box” supplies. Further, over one hundred tons of supplies have been received from Panama and Copenhagen; and national and international specialists are on site to provide technical assistance in emergency response.
UNICEF in Ecuador representative, Grant Leaity, extended his gratitude to Telefónica Movistar (OTECEL S.A.), a strategic ally with whom work has already been done regarding online protection for children and adolescents, for their commitment to children after the earthquake.
